ROAN MOUNTAIN IS CALLED THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF ALL HIGH MOUNTAINS

ROAN STRADDLES THE NORTH CAROLINA AND TENNESSEE LINES

What’s the Attraction?

At 6,285 feet it is not the highest mountain, but Dr. Elisha Mitchell, for whom Mt. Mitchell was named, called it “The most beautiful of all high mountains.” Running along a ridge of the Southern Appalachians, Roan Mountain straddles the North Carolina/Tennessee line and has one of the world’s largest areas of grassy balds, plus one of the world’s largest natural rhododendron gardens, a section of the Appalachian Trail, and a state park. In September 1780 the Overmountain Men trekked through, what is now the park, on their way to the Battle of King’s Mountain in South Carolina.

Roan Mountain is an unusual attraction in that it has the State of North Carolina’s famous Rhododendron Gardens on one side and a Tennessee State Park on the other. The Roan Mountain State Park is open year round—and regardless of when you go, there is plenty to see and do.
